UNIT 3: EVOLUTION OF DIGITAL ART

This page shows my art coursework where I focus on different kinds of digital art and how they evolved into what we now see.

(Note: The artworks above are examples of digital art made by other people that show how digital art evolved. My artworks are below, starting with my sketchbook slideshow.)

THE OSCILLON STAIRCASE

Summary

I created this artwork in response to the artist Ben F. Laposky (1914-2000), who was a mathematician and one of the earliest digital artists. He was known for creating artwork using an oscilloscope, which is a type of analogue electronic gadget. The artworks he produces with this device are called 'oscillons'. They are made through the arrangement of different wave patterns and are identified by separating them in different colours.

The meaning behind my artwork is to represent connection because of the many lines that make up the artwork. I chose a staircase specifically because it shows how change occurs when the lines go up and down through colour. This can be linked to the evolution of digital art as it changes each time it progresses.

CANDLE (CYBORG CHARACTER)

Summary

I created this artwork in response to the artist Josiah Brooks (Draw with Jazza), who also is an animator, author, and YouTube creator. He creates entertainment content through art and animation. This can be linked to the videos he makes such art challenges, tutorials, product reviews, and more.

The meaning behind my artwork response on the right is supposed to symbolise advancements in technology. The character is named Candle as he is supposed to be a symbol of light in an area mostly ruined and chaotic. This is a modern example on how digital art evolved.

FACING THE STORM

Summary

I created this artwork in response to the artist Max Asabin, who is a Russian hobbyist photo manipulator. He is well-known for showing his Photoshop artwork combined with how it looked like before all the images were merged together. He blends the scenes together using the Photoshop tools.

My artwork response is named Facing the Storm as it shows an unnamed individual in the midst of a storm. The storm highlights the lighting striking a ship and the swarm of spaceships shooting laser beams across the sky and sea. To put it simply, the individual is in the midst of chaos and destruction, which can symolise the life of a normal person surrounded in a world full of problems, whether it's caused by nature or mankind. Another modern example on how digital art evolved.
